This little diesel carries out all the odd jobs on the narrow gauge railway, from repairing the track to clearing up after accidents. He is a fearless and practical sort of engine, who for a time was mistakenly referred to in the American version of the Thomas and Friends TV Series as being female (when the character was most definitely male in the Railway Series). The TV Series' production company argued that Rusty had not been referred to in gender-specific terms before this. But despite this, many fans of the TV Series still consider Rusty to be male.
